FAQs

What is brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It differs from other martial arts in its emphasis on leverage and technique rather than strength and size, making it suitable for everyone. There is no striking in BJJ.

WHAT should i bring/wear for my first CLASS?

Please arrive 5-10 minutes before class to allow time for introductions and signing of waivers. Please bring a water bottle and preferably wear athletic clothing with no pockets/zippers, if possible. Form fitting clothing is preferred as you are less likely to get fingers/toes caught in it. Any jewellery other than plain ring bands should be removed. If you’re attending a Gi class and you don’t have a Gi just yet, we will have a spare Gi and belt for you for the class. A mouthguard is recommended if you choose to continue with your BJJ journey. Sandals are also a great idea to slip on and off when stepping off the mats / using the washroom.

See “Gym Rules and Etiquette” for more information:

do i need previous training in martial arts?

No! We have classes for everyone of all levels. Our job is to teach you everything you need to know to be safe and successful in BJJ, and to be apart of a positive and fun environment.

What are the benefits of practicing BJJ?

Practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers numerous benefits, and it’s likely that every member will give you a slightly different answer to this question. Improved physical fitness, enhanced self-defense skills, increased mental toughness, stress relief, and the connections you make with others within the BJJ community are common answers from BJJ practitioners.

I’m a woman and nervous to attend co-ed classes!

We understand that attending a co-ed class can be intimidating, but we encourage you not to let this hold you back. All of our members are extremely respectful and understand how nerve wracking the first few BJJ classes can seem for any new member. We want to ensure every student feels comfortable and we’ll do our very best to ensure we provide an atmosphere that will help you fall in love with the sport.

Can BJJ help with weight loss and fitness goals?

Yes, BJJ is a highly effective form of exercise that can aid in weight loss and help achieve fitness goals. Training sessions are intense and incorporate cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and flexibility exercises.

How often should I train Bjj to see progress?

Consistency is key in BJJ. Training at least 2-3 times per week is recommended to see steady progress, but ultimately, it depends on individual’s goals and other commitments. Members often change up their training frequency based on what else they have going on in their lives at that time, and that is completely understandable. The most important part is always stepping back on the mats.

is it okay to cross train with you/elsewhere?

Absolutely! We encourage fellow BJJ’ers to cross train with us, or our members to train with other gyms. You get to experience different athletes, their styles, and see more of the surrounding BJJ communities. Everyone is welcome at Disciple BJJ.

do i have to compete? Should i?

Competition is a personal choice between the student and the instructor. Competing may fast track your learning by providing unbiased feedback about your strengths and weaknesses through testing your techniques against unfamiliar athletes. While we are a gym that will always encourage our members to compete, it doesn’t matter if you do or don’t compete - we are just happy to be able to train together!

I’m ready for my first class. What now?

We thought you might be! Find a class on our schedule, and come on in to the gym - we’ll take care of you from there. If you’re not sure of the specific class you wish to start with, send us a message on our contact page or via one of our social media accounts and we’ll help you decide!
